Custom Model Data

Weatherzone’s dynamical atmospheric modelling team can configure, develop and test high resolution nested model domains centred upon any assets located around Australia. This model data would then be updated twice per day within our high performance computing facility, also providing a feed into our Opticast forecast system.

Accurate high resolution NWP is essential to allow Opticast to resolve to the greatest extent possible the local-scale meteorology crucial to detecting micro scale features such as sea breezes, circulation within convective cells, plus topographic and surface roughness effects.

The model used is the Weather Research and Forecasting system (WRF), developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). WRF is designed to be a flexible, state-of-the-art atmospheric simulation system that is portable and efficient on available parallel computing platforms. It is suitable for use in a broad range of applications across scales ranging from meters to thousands of kilometres.
